Medicare Part D Plans
Part D plans are federal programs that subsidize the cost of prescriptions drugs for Medicare Beneficiaries. It was enacted as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA)
Beneficiaries can obtain 2 types of private Part D Plans:
1. PDP (Prescription Drug Plan)
Prescription drug plan only that you can join.
2. MAPD (Medical Advantage Prescription Drugs)
Advantage plans that cover both medical and prescription drugs.
NOTE: MA – (Medicare Advantage)
Important: If a Medicare Advantage plan doesn’t include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, then the Medicare Advantage plan is known as an MA.
Important: Joining a MA plan “with no prescription drug coverage”, then you may not be permitted to add an additional standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
Different companies will offer plans based on these types. As an example Humana Health Care offers 3 Plan D Plans, Humana Walmart Rx Plan (PDP), Humana Preferred Rx Plan (PDP), Humana Enhanced Plan (PDP).
