What is Medicare Part D Coverage?

Medicare Part D Coverage is a prescription drug benefit program.

The program was created with the U.S. Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003.

The “D” for Part ā€œDā€ stands for “drugs”.

This program offers Medicare users basic choices:

  1. Keep traditional Medicare opting not to sign up for the prescription drug benefit.
  2. Keep the traditional Medicare and then enroll in a Medicare Part D plan
  3. Enroll with a different Medicare plan
  4. Enroll with a comprehensive private health plan that may or may not cover the prescription costs.

On Jan 1, 2006, the program began providing coverage for users.
